11/7/2007 - ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, Md. -- Memorial service to be held for Special Agent David A. Wieger of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, killed in the line of duty in Balad, Iraq, Thurs. Nov 1. Staff Sgt. David A. Wieger, was 28, and from North Huntingdon, Pa.

There will be a closed-casket viewing for family and friends Thurs. Nov 8 and Fri. Nov 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home located at 521 Main Street, Irwin, Pa.

Special Agent David Wieger's funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, Nov 10 starting at 10 a.m. at the Norwin Christian Church, (Huntingdon) Irwin, Pa. Visitors are asked to be at the church by 9:30 a.m. Immediately following the funeral service, a Rite of Committal and Full Military Honors will be held in Penn-Lincoln Memorial Park, Irwin, Pa.

A large contingent of local law enforcement is expected to attend service as well as a strong contingent from HQ AFOSI representatives and fellow AFOSI personnel from Travis AFB. Special Agent Wieger's parents will be honored by receiving his Bronze Star Medal (Posthumously) and the American Flag at the funeral.

Special Agent David A. Wieger was a Technical Services Agent at AFOSI Detachment 303, Travis Air Force Base, Calif. He served in that position since September 2004. In that position, he was responsible for the technical surveillance countermeasures program supporting all special access programs / special access required programs and all Air Force installations on the West Coast to include Alaska and Hawaii.

In his capacity SA Wieger conducted TSCM surveys that enhanced national security and force protection through the application of techniques and countermeasures that safeguard secure information facilities. He employed a vast array of highly specialized procedures and equipment designed to detect technical surveillance devices and identify security vulnerabilities that could be exploited to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Additionally, SA Wieger provided specialized technical investigative support to twenty-six AFOSI detachments and operating locations servicing six major Air Force commands. Prior to becoming a Technical Services Agent, he served in the base investigative branch at AFOSI Detachment 303 where he worked general criminal investigations.

Special Agent Wieger entered the Air Force in 1999 as a Visual Imagery and Intrusion Detection System Apprentice. As a result of his outstanding technical expertise, SA Wieger was recruited into the AFOSI's Tech Program in 2004. After successfully completing training at the AFOSI Academy, SA Wieger was assigned to AFOSI Detachment 303, Travis AFB. Special Agent Wieger was single with no children.

On Nov. 1, SA Wieger was killed while conducting a counterintelligence operation when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device.

The Wieger family has set up a memorial college fund in the name of SA David Wieger, benefiting his godchild, Tyler Martin. Those wishing to contribute may send contributions via direct deposit to:

Also killed in same incident were AFOSI Special Agents Nathan J. Schuldheiss, 27, Newport, R.I. and Master Sgt. Thomas A. Crowell, 36, Neosho, Mo.
