Those already in the AF Reserves are eligible for AFOSI special agent duty if they've served fewer than 12 years and are in the grade of senior airman, staff sergeant, technical sergeant, second lieutenant, first lieutenant, or captain. Applicants need to contact the nearest AFOSI detachment and provide them with required applicant information using the AFOSI APPLICANT CHECKLIST. The OSI detachment will interview you, determine suitability, and forward your package (see Application process below) on to AFOSI Reserve Affairs office for consideration. 

All Other Applicants 

You must first contact an Air Force Reserve recruiter who will determine your eligibility to enter into the AF Reserves. They can be reached at 1-800-257-1212 or visit the AF Reserve website at www.afreserve.com and select Contact A Recruiter. This is a requirement that applies to all those aspiring to join as well as to those already in the Reserves. 

Application Process (2 to 6 months)
The applicant process order for AFOSI includes the following:

  • Visit with AF Recruiter (Provides general info on the application process)
  • Interview with local agents from the AFOSI Detachment (Reviews and completes documents for package submittal)
  • Completion of the Applicant Package and forwarded on to AFOSI/RE (Detachment commander's recommendation is included)
  • Initial Screening by AFOSI/RE (Once eligibility is determined, Detachment is notified and Background investigation is initiated)
  • Background Investigation (Varies in time length depending on your history)
  • Screening by the AFOSI Command Applicant Review Board (CARB)
  • Approval by AFOSI Commander
  • Selection/non Selection: All Applicants & Detachments will be notified by mail.

    Please note that at any time, if your application does not meet the minimum requirements for each step above, you will not be considered for selection and notified by mail.
